Romans have reacted with dismay to news of clashes between rival fans and police during and after the Roma-Manchester United Champions league first leg quarter-final match.

Italians on the street say that fans on both sides have once again "proven their total idiocy."

A spokesperson for Rome's City Hall, Jean Leonard Touadi, suggests that small groups of violent individuals take any opportunity they can to behave badly.

"It's part of these small groups taking every opportunity to behave bad. You can find it in Rome, you can find it in London, you can find it in Manchester."

Police in riot gear clashed with Manchester United fans during the Champions League match with AS Roma on Wednesday.

The problems apparently began when opposing fans taunted each other following a Roma goal by banging on the partition separating the sections.

Roma won the match 2-1.
