Some 200 people chosen as volunteer leaders for the 2008 Olympic equestrian event participated at an orientation ceremony to kick off the Hong Kong equestrian volunteer program on Saturday.
The leaders, who must be fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, will take part in a two-day course to learn basic knowledge about the event and how to make it part of the 2008 Games held for the first time on Chinese soil.
A volunteer says she is proud of taking part in the activity.
"I think, as a Hong Kong citizen, it is my honor to participate in volunteer work for the Olympic Games. By devoting all my efforts to this sports event, I also hope to learn more."
Local organizers reveal that volunteers will be deployed to a myriad of responsibility areas, ranging from competition venues, translation and media support.
The equestrian event's chief executive officer, Lam Woon-Kwong says the trainer-volunteers have been chosen from a pool of 8,000 applicants. The leadership training programs are tailored for volunteers in Hong Kong by expert trainers.
"The first 200 volunteers we recruited will receive more comprehensive training that will enable them to become volunteer team leaders in the near future."
He also reminded volunteer leaders to be aware that they are serving on the very frontlines as ambassadors of the nation.
These volunteers will undergo some 80 hours of training, including residential training, which will be held at Po Leung Kuk holiday camp in Sai Kung, for two consecutive weekends in March.
