The heads of Italy's top football league clubs met on Thursday evening to agree on a common stance regarding the new rules on stadium security standards issued by the government.
League games in Italy's top two divisions, Serie A and B will resume again this weekend, but with only six stadiums currently meeting the new standards, many matches will be played behind closed doors.
As things stand, Serie B will resume on Saturday with no spectators present and on Sunday only five of the 10 Serie A fixtures will have fans present.
The new security standards have sparked an angry reaction from some soccer club officials.
AC Milan chairman, Adriano Galliani insisted the club has fulfilled its security obligations.
"We invested as much as possible to have a safe stadium, and we don't think it is fair to close the stadium if those working there have followed the legal requirements."
Premier Romano Prodi's Cabinet introduced the new measures in reaction to the fatal attack on 38-year-old policeman Filippo Raciti, during riots last Friday.
Except for the new stadium security standards, the Cabinet also approved other security measures, including banning clubs from selling blocks of tickets to visiting fans and banning suspected hooligans from entering stadiums.
