The "Jordanian Family Team" at the Winter Asiad
    2007-02-01 14:00:56     CRIENGLISH.com

At the ongoing Winter Asian Games, you can find a special team with all its members coming from one family. It is the "Jordanian Family Team."

CRI's Sun Yang has the details.

Reporter: There are 16 teams competing in the Winter Asian Games for the first time. The Jordanian team is one of them. But different from the others, all athletes in Team Jordan come from one family, the Badr Eldins.

Team leader Amin Khaled Badr Eldin is both the father and head coach, while his three children are the athletes. They all compete in the Alpine skiing event.

The family's eldest daughter, Leen Badr Eldin, participated in the lady's giant slalom race but only finished 20th. Still, her father was happy about the result.

"I'm very, very proud. Leen skied great. She did a lot better than we were hoping. We're very, very happy."

He says the country's limited natural resources have hampered its sports development. But he admitted that young people in Jordan, just like his children, are interested in winter sports, especially skiing.

"There are many Jordanian skiers, and up and coming, and I believe that you can see us participating more."

Talking about the team's goals for the Winter Asiad, the coach said, no matter the final results, he is proud to participate in the Games in the name of Jordan and just wants to relish in the opportunity to participate in its skiing events.

"(Our goal is) to carry the flag of Jordan, and to visit friendly countries and to increase the relationships between different countries in Asia."

Amin Khald thanks the Chinese organizers for inviting his team to participate in the event, and he hopes more Jordanian families get to come and compete in the next Winter Asian Games.
