Williams Claims Australia Open Title

Serena Williams defeated world No.1 and top seed Maria Sharapov Saturday in a masterful display on the Australian Open.

The American showed her opponent no mercy, winning the championship in just over an hour.

Currently ranked No.81, Williams'ranking is now projected to rise to No.14 after she captured her third Australian Open crown.

In the men's doubles, top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan successfully defended their Australian Open title after defeating No.2 seeds Max Mirnyi and Jonas Bjorkman.

This was the Bryans' fourth successive Australian Open doubles final and the victory secured their fifth Grand Slam title.

Meanwhile, in the men's final Sunday, top-ranked Roger Federer will aim for a 10th Grand Slam title against Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, who will be making his Grand Slam final debut.

It will also be Federer's third Australian Open title match, after having lifted winning trophies in 2004 and 2006. He holds a commanding 9-0 win record agaisnt his opponent.
