Chan: My Movies Have No Dirty Words

This was the Chinese and international martial arts and action hero's second time in India, the first time was shooting for The Myth in Hampi last year. Chan was here for a day, at the behest of UTV and co-star Mallika Sherawat. She called me and cried on the phone saying 'You have to come to my country.' I said 'Stop crying, I'll come!'

Dressed in an off-white Chinese collar shirt and pants, white socks and shoes, with a beige and gold open jacket, Chan was charming, amusing and most at ease. In a select meeting with the press, when asked if he had any idea of his superstar status in India, the Rush Hour actor said, I didn't know till Mallika told me. I was shooting in Hampi, in the middle of nowhere, and even there people knew me and would come and watch me all day. So now I realize that I have fans here.

Chan told the media that he wanted to do an Indian movie, and he's willing to learn to dance for the part. I want to do the movie in two versionsm, a shorter international version and the other with dancing and music. Chan came close to doing an Indian movie a few years ago, but the Indian producer and he could not agree on the project. It was like an Indiana Jones kind of movie. I hope to revisit that script one day, he smiled. Asked if he had plans for Indo-Chinese collaboration, Chan replied, We should work together more because together we make up almost half the world's population.

Known for his unique brand of action merged with comedy, Chan has battled several injuries, including a recent shoulder injury. But otherwise I practise martial arts everyday, he said. Asked what it took to conquer the West, Chan replied, It took 15 years to get into the American market. In the beginning they didn't like my kind of action-comedy. They liked the intense Bruce Lee kind, but now, after 15 years, they all want to learn the Jackie Chan style. I just never gave up; even if it meant breaking many bones.

Other than films, Chan has teamed up with Arnold Schwarzenegger to fight piracy. It kills cinema and has destroyed the Hong Kong film industry. Arnie and I are working to find solutions, but we need heavy punishment and need to educate kids that downloading is also illegal.

Accompanying Chan were his manager, producer of The Myth and director Stanley Tong. Big on children's charity, Chan, on behalf of UTV, presented a check to Mira Nair's Salaam Balak Trust. Doing charity makes me happier than winning the best actor award in China, said Chan, who is hugely popular with kids. That's why my movies have no dirty words and no heads blowing up. They're the kind of movies children can watch.

When asked if he'd set Rush Hour 3 in India, Chan quipped, That's set in New York and Paris, but maybe Rush Hour 4! And would he work with Sherawat again? Patting her on her turquoise and gold sari clad knee, Chan said, Definitely. In the next movie, I want to do a slow motion run down the beach with her.

For her part, Sherawat said she did The Myth because she got to work with the most famous Chinese man on Earth and to tell my grandchildren that I acted with Jackie Chan. So what if her roles might only be a debatable nine minutes.
