M: Péngy?umen. N?men h?o! Huānyíng shōutīng Xiànzài Xué Hàny?. W? shì ML.

S: Dà jiā h?o. Wǒ shìStuart. ML m?i h?o le w?men de hu?chēpiào.

S: We'll take train no. 21. 我们坐二十一次列车 w?men zuò èrshíyī cì lièchē.

M: Is train no. 21 an ordinary passenger train?

M: Is it an express train 是快车吗 shì kuàichē ma?

S: Kind of.

M: Is it a special express 是特快吗 shì tèkuài ma?

M: What platform does it leave from 它从哪个站台开出?Tā cóngněige zhàntái kāichū?

S: That was a short chat, but with plenty of very useful new things.

M: We're still at the station wǒmen hái zài hu?chēzhàn.

M: w?men zuò èrshíyī cì lièchē. 次 CI cì, means ‘order' or ‘sequence', and it's used for train numbers in China. 二十一次 is no. 21, èrshíyī cì.

S: èrshíyī cì lièchē. 列, LIE liè can mean ‘row' or ‘line'. A train is a row of carriages, and lièchē, as well as hu?chē, means ‘train'. ?rshíyī cì lièchē is train 21.

M: So how do we say, We'll take train no. 18? H?n h?o. 我们坐十八次列车 w?men zuò shíbā cì lièchē.

S: Liè is also the measure word for train. So, I see one train is, 我看到了一列火车, w? kàndàole yíliè hu?chē.

M: So now say, I see two trains. Méi cuò. 我看到了两列火车 w? kàndàole li?ng liè hu?chē.S: And there are several types of passenger train in China. One of them is 普通客车. 普通 PU TONG p?tōng, third tone first tone, is the same p?tōng as in p?tōnghuà. p?tōngmeans ‘common', ‘ordinary'. p?tōnghuà., common language, or standard Chinese. 客车 kèchē, passenger train, kèchē, p?tōng kèchē, ordinary passenger train, p?tōng kèchē

M: And they are a bit slow, the milk run. An express train快车 literally ‘fast vehicle' kuàichē is faster.

S: And the fastest, fewer stops, is a special express, 特快 tèkuài. Here we don't have to say chē, or lièchē, or hu?chē, or kèchē.

M: Simply, tèkuài. The 特 TE tè means ‘special' tè, and kuài we know means ‘fast'. So, 我们坐特快 we'll take a special express, w?men zuò tèkuài.

M: And we'll finish with a quick chat.

S: W?men zuò èrshíyī cì lièchē.

M: èrshíyī cì lièchē shì p?tōng kèchē ma?

S: bú shì.

M: shì kuàichē ma?

S: Kind of. Tā shì tèkuài lièchē.

M: And we have to specially quickly xià kè. Zài jiàn.
