Today's Highlight in History:

(The First Thanksgiving in 1621)

November 22 is the Thanksgiving day of 2007. The "First Thanksgiving" in 1621 was actually a harvest festival. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of thanksgiving. Since then each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation, usually designating the fourth Thursday of each November as the holiday.

1852: An earthquake opened the spit under the Lake Merced on November 23, and the lake is estimated to have lost 30 feet of water. Lake Merced is located in the southwest corner of San Francisco.

1977: European weather satellite Meteosat 1 was launched by a Thor-Delta rocket from Florida. From its orbital location of 0° it was able to transmit images of Europe, the Atlantic, the whole of Africa, the Middle East and part of South America.

1980: a strong (M=6.5) earthquake took place in Irpinia (Southern Italy) at about 250 Km from Rome on November 23,killing 4800 people.
