Thought for Today:

"Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute." — G.B. Stern

Today's Highlight in History:

1797: Inventor of the frameless parachute Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first successful silk parachute jump on October 22.He jumped out of a hot-air balloon from more than 3,000 ft. (915 m.) over Parc Monceau in Paris. Garnerin also developed the vented parachute, which improved the stability and smoothness of the fall.  His wife Jeanne-Genevieve was the first female parachutist.Garnerin died in a construction accident while making a balloon in Paris. He was hit by a beam.

1906:French artist and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne died on October 22 at the age of 67.  Cézanne can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. His work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. His often repetitive, sensitive and exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognisable.
