1957: The first artificial satellite Sputnik 1 was put into orbit on October 4 by Russia. Coming at the height of the Cold War, the launching of Sputnik caught the West by surprise, and in the U.S. led to a wave of self-recriminations, the beginning of the space race, and a movement to reform science education.
