Nine Chinese State Council departments will implement the regular news briefing mechanism from January 1st, next year.
The State Council Information Office Minister Cai Wu announced the plan on Thursday in Beijing.
Our reporter Dan Dan has more.
The nine departments who will participate in the news briefing mechanism include the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Construction and the State Intellectual Property Office.
Cai Wu said these departments will host either monthly or quarterly news briefings from January next year.
The minister said the news briefing mechanism and spokesperson system in China has progressed significantly over the past year.
"State Council Information Office held a total of 58 press briefings in 2006. Though the figure is a bit lower than last year, more minister-level personnel have chaired press conferences and provided the media with more in-depth information."
Cai Wu said the news briefing mechanism and spokesperson system have become more widely adopted across the world because of the current information age.
Now these practices need to be more widely adopted in China.
"Given that the world is paying closer attention to China and we're living in such an information-based age, relevant departments should release accurate and authoritative information as soon as possible. Otherwise, unnecessary misunderstandings may result."
The minister said government departments are obliged to release as much information about their affairs as possible because the major task of government organs is to serve the general public.
Meanwhile, Cai Wu said he's glad to see encouraging changes in the foreign media's China reportage over the past year.
"First of all, overseas reporters are covering more stories about China. As far as I know, statistics shown by certain media indicate an increase of some 30 percent to 40 percent. Secondly, the number of objective and comprehensive reports about China's economy and society has also grown drastically."
Cai Wu said the positive changes have resulted from China's economic and social development, which maintained its momentum over the past year.
Cai Wu also extended his thanks to all the journalists who have helped the world get to know China better through accurate and objective reporting.
