An international agreement on building a thermonuclear experimental reactor was signed in Paris on Tuesday. The project involves the European Union, China, Russia, India, the US, South Korea and Japan.
The reactor will be built in Cadarache in southern France. French President Jacques Chirac says the project is a great scientific move in human history.
[in French, 2a/soundibte/1122 reactor-1] "We have the undeniable obligation to conduct preparations of the energy issues for our future generations. This important project also showcases our pledge to help under the themes of unity and responsibilities."
The project is expected to produce energy with the same principles the sun and other stars work on and is intended to provide a virtually inexhaustible source of energy. In addition, the reactor will not pollute the environment or produce radioactive waste.
At the signing ceremony, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Xu Guanhua, says it is of profound significance for China's participation in the project.
[in Chinese, 2a/soundbite/1122 reactor-2] "First, it represents the great determination of Chinese government to resolve the issues of energy and environmental protection for all human beings. Secondly, China hopes to enhance its thermonuclear technology to international levels in a relatively short period."
With an estimated cost of 10 billion euros, if all goes well with the experimental reactor, officials hope to set up a demonstration power plant in Cadarache around 2040.
