Two years ago, China announced plans to build 400 new cities by the year 2020. To satisfy this kind of growth, Beijing-based Dutch architect Neville Mars came up with a design that would hypothetically accommodate the city's then estimated 18 million residents. It's called the Beijing Boom Tower. The complex is spread out over six hectares of land with 60 floors to support 5,000 apartments, 2 subway stations, parking lots, parks and shops.
Mars is the head of the Dynamic City Foundation and he hopes that this utopian plan will provide a solution to China's ever-growing urban areas. He is also putting out a new book on the Beijing Boom Tower research project called "The Chinese Dream." It will be published by Timezone8 Art Books at the end of the year. So I caught up with Neville Mars to talk about how realistic this model is and what he hopes to contribute to China's urban development.
