Hundreds of young directors, producers and publishers from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong attended China's first forum for the "Young Generation in Film Making" over the past weekend.
During the two day forum, the participants discussed topics including "How to establish a film system based on the creativity of young directors," "Marketing low budget films" and "Newcomers, New Style and New Problems."
Our reporter Yixiu has more.
Xie Fei, chairman of this forum, opened discussions by describing the reason for holding such a forum.
"Several years ago, 60 young directors shot their first films in three years in France. That was the French New Wave, which was regarded as an influential young director's movement. However, many young Chinese directors have made a lot of films in recent years, so, why do they have relatively little influence and what difficulties have they met?"
Meanwhile, there are still some lucky young Chinese directors who have become household names, such as Ning Hao.
The organizer of Asian New Director Project, Yu Weiguo was invited to talk about this project and their successful experience. The project also supported Ning Hao's box office favourite "Crazy Stone."
"The project is to find some talented young directors across Asia to do something together, hoping to stimulate a new film wave."
When asked about what inspiration he had received from the success of "Crazy Stone" on the Chinese mainland, Yu Weiguo pointed out the importance of the market.
"Compared with Hong Kong and Taiwan, only on the Chinese mainland can independent films survive. Just like in the United States, there are many big budget films and also low budget independent films."
Li Yunchan, director of the film "The Shoe Fairy," is one of the Taiwan directors who want to find out about the Chinese mainland market.
"We are keen to know what are the filmmaking circumstances for young directors in the Chinese mainland, because we do not have the opportunity to know them and their films. So I think it's helpful to attend this forum."
Li Yunchan's film "The Shoe Fairy" from Asian New Director Project was screened on Saturday night as part of the forum.
Other works of ten young directors, including Pang Ho Cheung's "Isabella", Li Yu's "Dam Street" and Peng Lei's "Peking Monster," were shown at the forum.
