Last year, Beijing's two top scorers in the National College Entrance Examinations both enrolled at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
The same could happen again this year, with eight Hong Kong universities currently recruiting mainland students.
CRI's Dan Dan has the story.
Reporter: This year, up to 2,000 mainland students are expected to enroll in eight of Hong Kong's publicly funded institutions, including the University of Hong Kong and the City University of Hong Kong.
More than 10,000 students across the mainland have applied to study at the University of Hong Kong this year, double the figure from last year.
The university plans to expand its enrolment of mainland students by 40 to 300 this year.
Eight Hong Kong universities are currently interviewing mainland applicants.
A professor from Hong Kong has some tips for hopeful students.
“The interview is organized like a free discussion. We give the students a topic, like real estate prices in Beijing, the Qinghai-Tibet railway or the World Cup. We try to discover their personal views on the issue through the interview.”
A recent survey finds that many mainland students apply to Hong Kong's universities because they think they offer a better education.
“I like the English-speaking environment. All courses are taught in English. I also believe I get a better opportunity to further my study overseas there.”
As the nation's top students line up for Hong Kong, officials from mainland universities say the competition will help their institutions evolve and progress.
They say students always choose the universities that will offer them the best employment opportunities, no matter where they're located.
