China has sent over 15,000 medical workers to aid 47 African countries since 1963. Thus far, as a result of this exchange, a total of 170 million African people have been treated.
Traveling to aid local people by providing western medical services, these medical workers also introduce traditional Chinese therapy to various African communities.
Chen Shuming is with the Chinese medical team in Zimbabwe. Currently, there are nine Chinese doctors in Zimbabwe. They take turns working in hospitals located in either the capital Harare or Bulawayo, the country’s second largest city. Chen explains that only the most skilled and experienced doctors are recruited into the medical teams that serve Africa. Furthermore, all are united by common goal.
“We all feel good here because we are here for one purpose: medical aid. On the one hand, this will improve friendship between our two countries; while on the other, we can make contributions to local people’s health.”
Chinese medical workers have won recognition and awards from both the local government and the larger public for their courage, medical skills and ethics. Sheila Mahere is a patient at Harare Central Hospital.
