China has made impressive achievements in the employment, social security and protection of laborers' legal rights in recent years. According to Minister of Labor and Social Security, Tian Chengping, the country has helped tens of millions of laid-off workers find new jobs and created even more jobs for the urban population. Xu Weiyi reports.
REPORTER: Minister Tian Chengping made the anouncement at the on-going 95th International Labor Conference in Geneva.
At the conference, he has also introduced the moves China has taken to implement the "Decent Labor Contract" proposed by the International Labor Organization as well as achievements China has made in this field.
"China has adopted very positive employment policies. While maintaining rapid economic growth, China has readjusted its economic structure to strengthen employment growth through economic development, promoted laborer competitiveness by providing vocational training and helped disadvantaged groups gain reemployment by introducing special supportive policies."
He says between 2001 and 2005, about 20 million laid-off workers were reemployed. Meanwhile, an additional 40 million of the urban population were also employed.
Over the past few years, China has been improving its social security system and expanding its coverage. At the moment, the system covers retirement and umemployment insurance, medical care, work injuries and parental leave. Coverage is now extending to self-employed groups and contract staff.
China is also expanding the social security system to rural areas.
The country also provides supportive policies and legal aid to migrant workers, laid-off workers from state-owned enterprises and long-term unemployed citizens. Related laws on labor contracts and resolving disputes are also under stipulation.
Tian Chengping has also proposed the International Labor Organization minimize the marginalization of disadvantaged groups in the world.
He also points out that in order to realize fair globalization and equal opportunity, the international community should provide necessary aid and support to underdeveloped regions.
The minister has also expressed China's willingness to cooperate with other countries in protecting laborers' rights.
