Melody: Cao Fang—A Rising Star

Singer-songwriter Cao Fang may not one of the most popular pop stars on the Chinese mainland now, but she certainly has the potential of becoming one in the next few years. Her originality, creativeness, songwriting ability, fresh, out-of-the-ordinary music and performing style helps her stand out of the pack. Today, our reporter Xiaohua presents to us the latest about this rising singing star and some of her groundbreaking songs.

Born in Xishuangbanna in the southwestern province of Yunnan, a fertile ground for singing and dancing talents, Cao Fang started a band with a group of boys and began writing songs of her own during high school. By chance, one of her early demo works was heard by the famous Chinese musician Xiao Ke. During a music competition, Cao Fang was accidentally discovered by Xiao Ke, who was one of the judges. Cao Fang then launched her music career at Xiao Ke's Taiyou music company.

"Black Perfume" was Cao Fang's debut album, released in 2003. It's a well made album, recorded with the assistance of some of China's first-rank musical types. The album blends folk ballads, British rock, trip-hop, electronic, bossa nova and other New Age musical elements. But these elements are not simply piled on top of each other. Instead, they are finely mixed and arranged to suit Cao Fang's own singing style, like in the title song "Black Perfume."

"Black Perfume" won great praise within the music industry. However, the music company at that time was somewhat inexperienced with music promotion, so the album did not sell well. All the same, this disappointment did not prevent Cao Fang's own personal development.

In 2005, Cao Fang released her second album, "Come Across Me." In this album, Cao Fang undertook all the songwriting responsibilities. Learning from her first album, Cao Fang simplified her melodies while maintaining her own singing style, which can be described as a monologue-like. This album helped her become the singer who garnered the most media attention that year. The title track, "Come Across Me," soon became a hit upon its release. It describes the happiness of a young girl and her optimistic way of seeing the world. The varied musical styles, including British rock and trip-hop, easily makes one want to dance along to it.

Cao Fang's music is simple and neatly arranged, carrying vivid expressions and visual feature of paintings like art, which Cao Fang is also very good at. Cao Fang presents in her songs, her own experiences and her view of life as a young girl who caters much to the taste of today's youth. "Come Across Me" and another track, "Urban Jackstraw," have both become hits from her second album. While most songs on this album shows her feminine side, there is one song that shows a harder edge to her. "I Don't Care Anyway" is band-driven. The melody is simple but outstanding. We wish Cao Fang further success and hope she realizes her musical potential in the future. Let's finish her story so far with the song "I Don't Care Anyway."
