Hello and welcome to this edition of Frontline. I'm Wu Jia.
Mei Ran Dong Li Residential Compound used to be a good-quality living area located in an inner suburb of Beijing, with apartments there selling well and at high prices.
But for more than half a year, it's seen dramatic changes. There are no sanitation services, no maintenance services, and no security guards.
The apartment owners had previously decided to end the contract with the compound's previous property management company, Meisheng Property Management, but the company refused to leave. Through public bidding, the owners hired a new management company, Sifang Property Management. The previous company was forced out to allow the new one in, but in the end Sifang also left - due to finance difficulties.
Residents now find themselves no longer able to live a normal life as they used to. Some have a lot of complaints, but don't know to whom they should direct them; some are angry, but they have nobody to take it out on; and there are even some people who regret firing the first management company, but they don't know what to do to make up for that. Our reporter Shen Ting brings us the story.
"Suddenly the rubbish will fly all over here."
"There are no security guards, and we don't have a sense of security living here."
"There were no streetlamps lit - even during this year's Spring Festival!"
These complaints come from people who live in Mei Ran Dong Li residential compound. How could a good-quality apartment compound come to this? Residents here say their property management company has deserted them. This is true.
