Ukrainian paintings, including some with Oriental and Chinese subjects, are on display at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Subjects include snowy landscapes, portraits and imperial gatherings.

The show of contemporary art includes 150 works by 14 painters.

One painting depicts Wuxi, a southern Chinese city. Mykhaylo Huyda paints Chinese girls and landscapes, combining the aesthetics of Chinese paintings with traditional Russian artwork.

Huyda favors gray and black that appear in Chinese ink-wash paintings. He says his favorite Chinese artists are Shi Tao and Qi Baishi.

In teaching his students, Huyda emphasizes the importance of learning ancient Chinese philosophy and literature.

"Russian art is not so familiar to the young generation," says Cao Guangyu, a Shanghai art critic. "But it was actually the 'art bible' in the early 1950s and 1960s in China. Some Ukrainian art, like that by Lepin, was known to almost everybody in the art circle at that time."

Address: 100 People's Ave.
