The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on Thursday launched a new accreditation program to certify businesses which provide outstanding service.
The Singapore Service Star was unveiled by Singapore's Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang on Thursday evening. The scheme rewards businesses with good service, in order to inspire the industry towards service excellence.
A star-shape decal will be given to retail outlets, food and beverage (F&B) joints and nightspots that have achieved better- than-average scores in mystery shopping assessments.
Currently, more than 300 establishments have joined the scheme, a number which the Tourism Board hopes will grow to 2,500 in five years.
Lim said Singapore now ranks the 10th out of 134 countries in the Global Competitiveness Index's "Degree of Customer Orientation ", which measures a company's responsiveness to customers' needs. This is an improvement from the 17th place three years ago.
Lim added that the recent global economic slowdown underscores the need for businesses to not only deliver quality goods but also provide quality service.
"We would like to encourage businesses to take this as an opportunity to regroup and rethink, and invest in capability development to improve service quality," he said.
