UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has told the international community that dealing with the current world food crisis was a "fight that we cannot afford to lose."
Speaking at a UN-hosted summit on the food price crisis in Rome, the UN chief called on world leaders to "move ahead collectively with a sense of urgency and purpose to fighting hunger and promoting world food security."
"I think that there is an urgent need to establish a greater degree of international consensus and agreed policy guidelines on biofuel production, which take full account of food security, income and energy needs at all levels of our countries."
Ban Ki-moon said 15 billion US dollars to 20 billion US dollars was needed each year to boost food production to combat hunger.
The UN chief said most of that money would have to come from concerned countries. |
