Syria under Further Pressure to Grant Wider Humanitarian Access
The Syrian government was put under further pressure Thursday by the UN Security Council and the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to allow wider access for humanitarian aid.

G8 Calls for Observer Mission to Syria
Foreign ministers from the Group of Eight (G8) called for an immediate monitoring mission to Syria, the group said in a joint statement on Thursday.

About Syria

Syria
Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. The modern Syrian state was established after the First World War as a French mandate. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic.

Bashar al-Assad
Bashar al-Assad was born on 11 September 1965. He is the President of Syria and Regional Secretary of the Ba'ath Party. His father Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria for 29 years until his death in 2000. Al-Assad was elected in 2000, re-elected in 2007.
