About the Earthquake
On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 10 miles (16 km) away from the capital city Port-Au-Prince. A tsunami warning was issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for outlying regions but was later cancelled. Multiple aftershocks have hit the area, including one measuring magnitude 5.9.
