Marc and Holly Sulzckl, an American couple traveled thousands of miles to serve as volunteer teachers in China.
Both Holly and Marc used to teach writing and grammar in an American secondary school. "Thanks to the same career, we got to know each other and fell in love," said Holly with a smile. "We always support each other¡¯s career. As for volunteer teaching, such meaningful work, my husband and I did not hesitate to apply for it."
The couple realized their goal in the summer of 2008 when the Peace Corps, a famous volunteer organization in America, sent them to KaiLi University in Guizhou province, the eastern part of Southwest China. They became one of 6 volunteer couples among the whole 100 Peace Corps volunteers in China.
Teaching English in KaiLi, Holly and Marc found the students there were too shy to speak. Thus, they transformed the traditional teaching method into an interactive one by talking to students on various topics and by singing English songs with them.
The free and happy environment gradually enabled students to express themselves in English with more confidence and initiative. "The students love them." praised Professor Xie Guihua, the dean of the foreign language department at Kaili University.
Last year, the couple was invited to the 50th anniversary of Kaily University. "I feel honored," Marc said.
Except for teaching, Holly and Marc spent lots of time being exposed to Chinese culture. "We expect that the exotic air can enrich our life and strengthen our love," Holly said.
They were fascinated by the traditions and customs of minority groups in southwest China, and constantly enchanted with the local folk songs and dances. "The films and TV programs cannot reflect real Chinese culture," said the couple who always shared photos they took in China with their friends in America through the Internet.
They made efforts to learn not only the Chinese language but also Chinese cuisine, such as Kung Pao Chicken, Fried potato strips, and Fish in Sour Soup (famous cuisine of Miao ethnic group).
Holly and Marc said they will tell their American students about their precious 2 years experience in China, letting more people know about China. |
