Diversion of Yangtze River to Tackle Wuxi Water Crisis
China has stepped up the diversion of the Yangtze River to dilute water polluted by blue-green algae in a lake that provides drinking water for millions of people in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi.
Water from the nation's longest river is flowing into Taihu lake at a rate of 150 cubic meters per second, up from the earlier127 cubic meters per second, and the lake has received a total of 190 million cubic meters of Yangtze water since May 11, according to the water ministry's Taihu Valley Administration......

Blue-Green Algae Bloom Threatens Water in Wuxi
A fast-spreading blue-green algae has polluted a lake that provides drinking water for millions of people in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Wuxi, an economically dynamic city 128 km from Shanghai with a population of more than 5 million, saw panic buying of bottled water and bread on Wednesday, a day after Taihu Lake started to stink with a blue-green algae bloom. Gov't Measures to Deal with Wuxi Algae Bloom
An official from Wuxi's water resources management department has said that the city government is planning to artificially induce rain on Thursday or Friday to dilute Taihu lake's water, sdnews.com reported.
The official, surnamed Zhang, said that the local environment agency is closely monitoring lake quality around the clock, and that blue-green algae will be cleared out as soon as possible. The official added that diverting water from the Yangtze River to the lake has been underway at the usual time, especially during summer. But the idea of a dam explosion - to divert Yangtze River water - is still under consideration......

Wuxi Water Still not Clear
Tap water quality in Wuxi, eastern China's Jiangsu Province has still not been improved, as of Thursday, CCTV reports.
Citizens complained that tap water is so tainted that bottled water is being sold hot. There are still some vendors deliberately driving up water prices. And citizens hope that the government can strengthen bottled water distribution throughout such areas.
Some staff working in restaurants in Wuxi told CCTV's reporter that customers will first ask whether the meals were made using tap water or bottled water. And, due to the high cost of bottled water, many restaurants in the city have suspended their complimentary porridges and soups......

Water Shortage in Wuxi Gets Timely Relief
Major supermarket chains have transported emergent supply of bottled water from neighboring cities to the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi in Jiangsu Province to relieve the severe water shortage in the city.
Fast-spreading blue-green algae have caused the water to stink in the Taihu Lake that provides drinking water for millions of local people.
Shanghai Carrefour transferred 7500 bottles of water to stores in Wuxi, selling at a 10 percent discount. The local Lianhua Zhongbai supermarket has sufficient stocks at its 17 stores in the city, thanks to supplies from Zhejiang Province, Shanghai and other cities in Jiangsu. Other supermarkets, including Metro and Wal Mart, are also selling out thousands of boxes of bottled water......
