National Science Week in Ningxia

The 2007 National Science Week in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region kicked off in Yinchuan, capital city of the region on Saturday.

The week-long event, which takes place in the third week of May each year, aims to promoting science in China. This year's week is themed "building a country of scientific innovations".

Various scientific activities will be carried out during the activity, such as exhibitions in schools, communities and rural area.

China Launches National Science Week

China's National Science Week opened on Saturday morning. The annual week-long event from May 19 to 25 is themed "building a country of scientific innovations".


Professor Li Zhensheng at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a lecture about "Learning, Practice and Innovation" in the Olympic village in Beijing when the event opened.

Li Zhensheng was awarded the 2006 Top National Prize of Science and Technology this February for his remarkable achievements in hybrid wheat breeding and genetics, and outstanding contribution to the nation.

Over 1,000 scientific activities will be carried out around the country during the week.

The Beijing Municipal Government has already hosted a grand scientific exhibition in the National Olympic Sports Center prior to the national scientific event.

Bricks that Drink Water

China's 2007 National Science Week kicked off on Saturday morning, after a grand scientific exhibition was held in the National Olympic Sports Center in Beijing.

The Sina news website reports one eye-catching exhibit was a set of special ground-bricks that can "drink" water.

The rigid bricks, which are in various different colors, are made of Aeolian sand from the desert and the additive used in the bricks enables water to rapidly penetrate it.

The theme of the National Science Week for 2007 is "building a country of scientific innovations".

Traffic Emulation System of the Olympics

China's 2007 National Science Week kicked off on Saturday morning, after a grand scientific exhibition was held in the National Olympic Sports Center in Beijing.

The Sina news website reports that a traffic emulation system for the Beijing Olympics Games was displayed at the exhibition.

It can use three-dimensional and quantitative analysis to test the effects of various traffic plans.

The system contains specific information about the city's road network, Olympic transportation lanes, the traffic network around the Olympic Park, subway stations and Olympic constructions.

The most effective traffic program can be investigated using the simulation and may be put into practice during the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games.

Background of the National Science Week

The National Science Week is an annual event that promotes science in China and takes place in the third week of May each year.

It has been organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology since 2001.

This year's event, which takes place from May 19 to 25, focuses on "building a country of scientific innovations".
