Netizens at more than twenty websites have called on Chinese athletes to wear traditional Han Dynasty style clothes at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

People's Daily reports that those who support the motion say it will help Chinese people remember their traditional culture, strengthening their cultural identity and confidence.

But many others oppose the idea, saying it shows prejudice against other ethnic groups who live in China.

Hong Kong based Dakungpao newspaper also calls it a showy idea that could actually have a negative impact on efforts to rejuvenate traditional Chinese culture. It says Han clothes are just a symbol of traditional culture that can't convey any of its profound meanings. Making Chinese athletes wear the costumes would be a shallow display of cultural pride that contradicts traditional Chinese culture.
