Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged railway workers to put top notch management practices in place. The president made the remark when he inspected the operation along the Qinghai-Tibet railway.

He also calls on local officials to seize the opportunities the railway will create to boost prosperity and ethnic unity in the country's western regions.

Our reporter Dan Dan has the story.

During the inspection tour, President Hu Jintao has praised the contribution workers have made over the years to build the world's highest railway.

ˇ°Many railway workers have challenged the limits and strived for the best. The project is not only a magnificent feat in China's history of railway construction, but also a great miracle in the history of rail across the world.ˇ±

He also encourages railway staff to continue using first class management practices during the railway's operation.

ˇ°We should not only build a top-ranking plateau railway, we should also guarantee that its operation and management is also one of the best in the world."

The President has also asked local officials to use all their resources to accelerate economic and social development, and improve living standards.

In the meantime, he stresses that the environment should be protected for the benefit of future generations.

The new railway stretches some 2,000 kilometers from Xining, the provincial capital of Qinghai, to Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Some 960 kilometers of tracks are located 4,000 meters above sea level and the highest point is over 5,000 meters.
