Michael Lee's Diary in Golmud

Most of the local people living in Golmud come from other provinces. This is an immigrant city.

I met these migrant workers when I was doing street interviews. Cigarettes, a few bottles of beer, and singing indigenous folk songs together, this is all they have for a party. (Smile...) But look at their faces, who would say they are not happy?

All of them can sing Qinghai folk songs very well, but the one on the right-hand side is the best. I was so impressed by his performance. When he is singing I can do nothing but enjoy the beautiful melody he creates.

Some people you meet only once in your lifetime. But the moment can seem eternal. The moment Yajie pressed the camera button took no more than half a second, but this picture represents a lot more than this. It's a start of a pleasant journey, it's a beautiful afternoon, it's a happy memory shared with a group of sincere strangers.

The hotel we're staying in is called "Gui Bin Lou" (Super VIP Guest House). The reason why I took a shot of the entrance is that there is another "Gui Bin Lou" in Beijing, a five-star hotel which is located on Chang An Avenue. What a coincidence. The "Gui Bin Lou" in Beijing is very luxurious. This one is not quite as luxurious, but it's still quite good. The hotel staff members are very nice. They always make up our room nicely, and whenever we ask them for a favor, they help us as soon as possible.

I've been smoking sometimes because I have to work until very late in the evening. But my roommate doesn't smoke. So one day at about 1:30 in the morning, I finished my work and went downstairs to smoke. When I lit up a cigarette, I heard someone snoring in the lobby. Who could that be? I went to look, and saw that it was the waitress! She was sleeping in the snack bar in the lobby. She must be very tired.

I've never heard a... woman snoring except my mom!

This is one of my favourite pictures! This perfectly matches the image of a "Real Man" in my mind. The rifle is quite heavy; it feels like a real one.

I am playing target practice in Golmud. Also I feel very proud that I can guard this nice city. But who am I guarding? Maybe those people who are playing Majong and pool behind me!
