100Mln Olympic Flowers to Decorate Beijing
    2008-06-06 18:19:31     CRIENGLISH.com
Beijing will begin decking its streets with 100 million flowers starting June 20 in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games, the Beijing Evening News reports.

The flowers will be distributed around Olympic stadiums and main roads in the capital. Forty million plants will be placed around Tiananmen Square, the Airport Expressway and the Olympic park area.

Blue and white flowers will be used twice as often as usual in city landscaping, as the two colors are popular in many countries around the world.

Two flower beds shaped like lucky clouds, the design on the Beijing Olympic torch, will be constructed from red grass beside the Water Cube and Datun road in the Olympic park area.

The Olympic flowers, 576 flowers selected last year from among 2,000 breeds, include the China rose, pansy, morning glory and zinnia. Some of the plants have been genetically altered to bloom in August if they do not do so naturally.

The landscaping project is scheduled for completion by July 8.
