88 Yuan to Send Your Wishes into Space
    2007-06-28 20:35:10     CRIENGLISH.com

A visit to space may remain a mere dream to most of us. That's partly because few of us are as rich as American multimillionaire Dennis Tito, the first ever space tourist funded with money from his own pocket. However, we can consider an interesting enterprise from a Hong Kong company offering to send our wishes into orbit for affordable prices.

The Hong Kong company, the Space Wishes Service, is a collaboration with U.S. company Celestis, a Houston-based commercial space service who provide "Memorial Spaceflights" ¨C the launching of the cremated remains of one's loved-one into space.

Customers can choose between two types of services ¨C the launching of written words and pictures, or the launching of personal belongings, according to Mai Zhaoqi, the investment director of the company.

The written words and pictures will be processed into digital forms, and then placed into specially-made containers, before being sent into space via rockets. A "space letter" lasting no more than a hundred words will cost you 88 yuan (US$11).

As for the personal belongings, be they ornaments, hair or jewelry - they could be put into specially-made containers, sent into orbit and then returned to earth. This service charges 9900 yuan (US$1300) per gram.

Each customer will be given a certificate and a video recording of the whole process. And customers are welcomed to watch the launches in person.

The space service company hasn't yet registered at any industrial or commercial offices in Beijing.
