Zhejiang Halves Film Prices in Olympic Month

If you live in Zhejiang Province, watching the Beijing Olympics is not the only option for recreation this August. The coming month also means lots of cheap movies.

Two cinema chains in the eastern Chinese province have announced they will offer a 50-percent discount on every movie screened between August 1-25, the Zhejiang Daily reported Wednesday.

The newspaper cited a source from the Zhejiang Time Cinema Chain as saying the move aims to benefit movie-goers as a way of celebrating the Olympics.

The idea was also embraced by Zhejiang Star Lights. The two chains together cover theaters in such cities as Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing and Jiaxing.

Besides current blockbusters such as "Red Cliff" and "Kung Fu Panda," August will see some long-awaited films open in China, including the Wachowski brothers' "Speed Racer," opening on August 10, and Hollywood-made "The Incredible Hulk," which opens on August 20.

Some other benefits will be available for membership card holders and children, a report on China Central Television (CCTV) said.

Chinese theaters usually offer 50-percent discounts every Tuesday, but such a promotion lasting for nearly a month is unprecedented, CCTV says.

Summer has always been a peak season at the box office, but analysts say the cinemas have decided to launch a promotion because of fears that movie-goers will choose to stay at home watching the Olympics.
