A Vietnamese TV station has signed a copyright contract with the producer of American Idol, one of the world's most popular TV shows, to create Vietnam Idol, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Monday.
"We want to create more opportunities for young people, especially those in rural areas, who love music and want to be involved in singing," Nguyen Chi Tan, deputy director of the local station, Ho Chi Minh City Television, said, noting that he hoped Vietnam Idol would become the country's biggest music event in 2007.
Over 8,000 local people aged 16-30 are expected to show their singing talents at the Vietnam Idol show, which will be aired on seven major TV stations in the country until July. Like the American show, the winner will be selected by viewers who send their votes via the Internet or phone.
American Idol, which airs in nearly 110 countries and regions, has become a TV phenomenon, consistently ranking as the most-watched show on U.S. television. Spin-offs of the show have been launched in 39 countries, said the report. |
