Zhong met Russia's Oxana Ermakova in the finals. Both players were very prudent and neither side would make the first attack. As a result, they each received a red and a yellow card for being passive in the first two rounds of the competition.

Ignited by the punishment, both players began their fight in the third round to a 5-5 draw.

China's Zhong Weiping took a precious point in the one-minute extra time to wind up the match 6-5, en route to win the gold medal.

The Nanjing FIE Grand Prix serves as one of the qualifiers for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

A total of 90 athletes from 18 countries and regions have participated in the Grand Prix, which runs from May 18 to 21.
