Athletics: Mottram Wins But Misses NY Record

Australian distance runner Craig Mottram narrowly missed the race record in successfully defending his 10 kilometre title in New York.

Mottram's time of 28 minutes, 13.3 seconds was just outside the race record set by Kenya's Paul Koech (28:10) in 1997.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist missed out on a $13,215 bonus on offer to any runner who could break the race record.

Britain's Mo Farah finished second in the Central Park race behind Mottram, while American Anthony Famiglietti claimed third.

Kenya's Linus Maiyo finished fourth.

Mottram's winning margin was 24 seconds, and the Olympian said the dominance of his win was more important than the race record.

"It's difficult when you've got to run the second half of a 10k on your own, especially on a hilly course.

"But I gave it everything I had today. I ran very solid all the way through to the line and just missed the record."
