Table Tennis: Surprises Rock Women's League

Traditional powerhouses have suffered unexpected losses in the women's competitions at the opening of the 2006 table tennis China Super League season.

Former world number one Wang Nan of Liaoning club lost both her innings against Bayi, the army team.

Liaoning's national team player Guo Yue won her first match but stumbled in the second match against Bayi's Chang Chenchen after a close five-set contest.

Bayi won the opening round 3-1.

Jiangsu's 14-year-old national team member Li Xiaoxia became another big-name victim on Saturday.

Jiangsu also lost the series 3-1 to Beijing University.

Guangdong's Japanese import Ai Fukuhara won her singles match against her rival from Sichuan. The win, however, became the only victory for the team Saturday night, as Guangdong was beaten by Sichuan 3-1.

In men's competitions, world top paddler Wang Liqin led his new club, the Bayi team, whitewashed the Sichuan team, led by Athens Olympics champion Ryu Seung Min.

Shaanxi beat Jiangsu 3-2 while Beijing lost to Wuxi 3-1.

The 2006 table tennis China Super League will last from May 20 to August 19.
