Twice Olympic champion Yang Yang said on Wednesday that her teammate Wang Meng's victory in the women's 500m short track speedskating keeps China's dominance in the event.
"I am proud of her. Our rule over the distance continues," the 500m and 1,000m winner in 2002 told Xinhua after Wang Meng beat world record holder Evgenia Radanova of Bulgaria and Canada's Anouk Leblang-Boucher.
The 29-year-old Yang, who ended China's winter Olympic gold drought, lost her chance to defend her title when the Chinese team picked Wang and Fu Tianyu for the event.
"It was a difficult decision. But once the decision was made, I accepted it without grudges."
Yang said she trusted her younger teammates all the time.
"I know how nervous they (Wang and Fu) were. I was nervous too and my hands were sweating. But I believed they would make it. And they did."
The Olympic veteran added that Wang's victory made Chinese skaters' journey easier. "We've got one. What a relief for the team? We will go for more," she said.
