Tennis: Federer Wins Australian Open
2006-01-29 20:19:02  CRIENGLISH.com
Roger Federer has put an end to a dream campaign by the unseeded Marcos Baghdatis, winning the Australian Open men¡¯s final 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2.

The 20 year old Cypriot began strongly, winning the first set in a tie break, only to go down in the second, also in a tie break. He never regained his confidence, winning just two games in the following two sets, handing 24 year old Federer his seventh grand slam title.

Bagdhatis has become a hero in his native Cyprus, a country that has never seen one of its players in the final of a grand slam tennis tournament, and he certainly captured the admiration of tennis fans more broadly, beating fourth-seed David Nalbandian, second seed Andy Roddick and seventh ranked Ivan Ljubicic on his way to the final.

Roger Federer, meanwhile, has now won all seven of his grand slam finals, the only man to do so in more than a century, and has passed legends like Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg in his pursuit of Pete Sampras's record 14 majors.
