Chinese Explorers Back Home
2006-01-05 17:03:46  CRIENGLISH.com
Chinese explorers have returned to Beijing after their Antarctic adventure.

Over the past month, the team walked 120 kilometers across the Antarctic ice sheet to reach the South Pole. They also reached Mt. Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica.

The team combated extremely low temperatures and blizzards to complete the whole task within 35 days, two weeks earlier than they had expected.

Team leader Wang Yongfeng said the strong team spirit amongst the members encouraged them to overcome many difficulties.

"All of our team members did a good job in the exploration. They overcame frostbite and cold weather to bring it to success."

Successful completion of this expedition made Wang Yongfeng, Ciluo and Liu Jian the first three Chinese to complete the grueling "7 plus 2" program.

"7 plus 2" is also known as the grand slam for adventurers worldwide as they set to conquer the higest mountain in seven continents and scale the two poles on foot.

To date, there are only eight people on the earth have completed such a great goal, including the three Chinese.

Wang said it was a breakthrough in world exploration history.

"We have three people who completed the "7 plus 2" program in one time, which outnumbers the explorers from any other one country."

Wang and his team hope their experience in the Antarctica will generate more public interest in their exploration, and more Chinese will complete the "Adventure Grand Slam."
