Volleyball: China Loses to US in World Grand Champions Cup
2005-11-16 22:37:27  CRIENGLISH.com
China lost to the U.S. 3-0 in the World Grand Champions Cup volleyball tournament.

Defending champions China have suffered their second defeat in the World Grand Champions Cup volleyball tournament, losing to the US by 3-0.

The Olympic champions failed to shake off the chill of an opening loss to Brazil, and were beaten 25-22, 25-23, 25-24.

It was the first time the US team, led by Chinese volleyball legend Lang Ping, had beaten the Asian power house team.

Lang's squad lost to the Chinese team, led by Chen Zhonghe, 3-0 at the world grand prix in June.

Respondence from Coaches and Players / Your view / Ralated stories

Chen Zhonghe: (Head coach of the Chinese women's team)

"The U.S. team played a perfect match this time. However, the attacks from our Chinese were unstable. The young players, such as Li Juan and Chu Jinling, were unstable on the court; while the veterans, who just came back from the National Games, were over-exhausted...We couldn't win a point at a crucial moment when we had the chances."

"Although we lost the first two matches in the tournament, I think it's not a fatal problem for us. We should make some adjustment in the coming matches."

Li Juan (Player of Chinese team)

"It's my first time to play with the national team. I did not acquaint myself with the American players. My teammates and I were in a better mood today, compared with the match against Brazil yesterday. However, the team was still some way shy of true form in the match."

Lang Ping (Head coach of the U.S. Team)

"The competition was tight and tense throughout the whole match. We do better than China in dealing with the winning shot. And our team is more stable this time."

"We lost our last two matches to Poland and China at the world grand prix, and we planned to win at least one set this match. The victory is unexpected and we feel very happy. We learned a lot from the match."

"The Chinese team did a good job today. The full-set match against Brazil made them exhausted in today's performance. The physical demands are a big problem for Asian spikers in playing long-scheduled matches such as those in the world championships and the Olympics."
