Mauritania Junta Releases Ousted President
    2008-12-21 17:54:48     Xinhua
Mauritanian President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, who was ousted in a military coup in August this year, has been released by the Junta from house arrest, Reuters reported on Sunday.

The Mauritanian military staged a coup on Aug. 6 in the capital of Nouakchott, arresting President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf.

Soon after the coup was staged, soldiers in the country announced the establishment of the State Council, saying that Abdallahi was no longer president.

The State Council issued a statement later, saying that the council will be led by Mauritanian's former presidential guard chief Gen.Mohamed Ould AbdelaAziz.

The coup, which was widely condemned by the international community, came after Abdallahi fired several top army officers.
