Norway Respects U.S.-Czech Treaties on U.S. Radar: FM
    2008-12-19 05:18:22     Xinhua
Norway disagrees with but respects the U.S. plan for the stationing of a missile defense radar in the Czech Republic that is to be part of the U.S. missile defense system in central Europe, visiting Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere told a press conference here on Thursday.

After his meeting with Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, Stoere said that Norway had always had a critical view on the plans for the construction of the missile defense system in central Europe which is no secret.

However, Norway respects the fact that there are bilateral treaties between the Czech Republic and the United States, Stoere added.

He said Norway wanted to take part in further negotiations on the system that were to take place within NATO.

Stoere expressed his country's position on the missile defense system on the same day when a delegation of U.S. Congressmen headed by influential Democrat Ellen Tauscher discussed with the Czech officials the building of the radar base on Czech soil.
