A senior Palestinian peace negotiator on Monday stated that a comprehensive peace deal with Israel must be reached away from transitional solutions.
"The deal should be away from transitional agreements and the issues should not be postponed, "The agreement should be on everything or nothing," said Saeb Erekat, a member of the Palestinian negotiation team.
Meanwhile, Erekat urged the EU to oblige Israel to carry out its obligations under the U.S.-backed Road Map peace plan and to lift an 18-month-old blockade on Gaza Strip.
Earlier, the Palestinian presidency on Monday called on Middle East peace diplomatic group to shoulder their responsibility over Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
The Quartet of Middle East peace envoys, which comprises the U. S., the EU, Russia and the UN will meet Monday in New York and will discuss the ongoing peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians ahead of the U.S. administration's change.
The U.S. has been sponsoring the peace talks since they were launched in November 2007. The talks failed to achieve any breakthrough and gaps between the two sides are still wide.
"The Quartet should shoulder its responsibilities in activating the peace process and to really work on implementing the Road Map and the Arab Peace Initiative," said Nabil Abu Rdineh, spokesman for the Palestinian presidency. "We need a political activity, not only statements."
He stressed that Israel must be forced to "remove the obstacles it puts" on the way of the negotiations, mainly the construction of settlements in West Bank and East Jerusalem, the two territories that would be part of the future Palestinian statehood. |
