Zimbabwe Army Officers Strongly Warned against Violence
    2008-12-06 21:25:46     Xinhua
Zimbabwean Defense Forces Director of General Policy, Public Relations And International Affairs, Emmanuel Matatu, has said it is not the responsibility of army officials to try and address the current economic challenges especially through unruly and violent behavior, ZBC News reported on Saturday.

Brigadier general Matutu was speaking at the combined graduation ceremony at the Zimbabwe school of infantry in Mbalabala Barracks on Friday.

He said the recent actions by the some members of the Zimbabwe National Army implicated in a spate of violent acts are a disgrace to the profession and will not go unchecked.

He said the organization will continue to maintain the highest standards of discipline that has earned the force a good name regionally and internationally.

Matatu assured the officers that the government is working hard to ensure that workable economic recovery policies are implemented for the benefits of all Zimbabweans.

Police have arrested 10 more soldiers in connection with the violent disturbances that occurred in Zimbabwe's capital city of Harare since last week as investigations into the skirmishes intensified, The Herald said on Thursday.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena  confirmed the arrest of the 10, bringing the total number of soldiers arrested since Thursday last week to 16.

A group of soldiers went on the rampage, beating up illegal foreign currency dealers and looting shops in the city centre, Mbare and Chitungwiza between Thursday last week and Monday this week. The government has issued a stern warning to the perpetrators of the violence that they will be brought to justice.

Defence Minister Sydney Sekeramayi on Tuesday called a press conference at which he assured the nation that the situation was under control and that measures would be taken to ensure such wanton acts of violence did not recur.
