Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd congratulated Barack Obama on his election victory in a conversation on Friday that touched on the global challenges facing the two countries.

In what Rudd described as a "friendly conversation", Rudd re- stated his enthusiasm for positive Australian-US relations.

"The President-elect and I spoke about the strength of the Australia-United States relationship, and our commitment to take that relationship to even greater strengths into the future," Rudd said in Sydney in a statement.

"I'm convinced that we're going to have a first-class working relationship with president-elect Obama," Rudd said, adding that the 10-minute conversation covered the common challenges they face such as the global financial crisis and climate change.

"As I've said before publicly, I believe him to be a very good man. I've also said publicly that his message of hope to America is, I believe, equally a message of hope for the world," he noted.
