Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Monday that Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence is illegal.

Basescu summoned the parliamentary parties' leaders at Cotroceni Presidential Palace to discuss the recent developments in the region.

He reiterated that Romania's stand on Kosovo's independence remains unchanged.

Basescu told the parliamentary party leaders that neither himself, nor Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu made any statements on Sunday, right after Kosovo's declaration of independence, because it was established that no head of state or government would make any statements before the end of the CAGRE ( the Council of General Affairs and External Relations) meeting in Brussels, devoted to consultations on the status of Kosovo.

Basescu has repeatedly said Romania will not recognize an independence that might be declared unilaterally by the Pristina- based ethnic Albanian authorities.

Kosovo on Sunday morning declared its independence, after the Parliament in Pristina adopted a declaration of independence from Serbia, read at the extraordinary meeting of the Kosovo's legislative by Premier Hashim Thaci.
