Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci is to announce the date for the declaration of independence at 1:30 p.m. local time (1230 GMT) Friday, according to reports reaching here from the Kosovo capital Pristina.
Serbia's Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic Thursday urged the UN Security Council to oppose Kosovo's expected declaration of independence and called on the secretary-general to order that any proclamation be declared null and void.
"Let me be very clear. The Republic of Serbia shall never accept any violation of its territorial integrity. We shall never recognize Kosovo's independence," Jeremic told the council.
"We shall not waiver. We shall not yield, should this cowardly act proceed unchecked. Not now. Not in a year. Not in a decade. Never. For Kosovo and Metohija shall remain a part of Serbia forever," Jeremic said.
The Security Council is deeply divided on the future of Kosovo with the United States and European Union members supporting Kosovo's independence while Russia and Serbia strongly oppose it. |
