U.N. Chief Appeals for Job Opportunities for Disabled Persons
    2007-12-04 07:08:27     Xinhua
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the international community on Monday to safeguard adequate employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Marking the International Day of Disabled Persons, which is observed on Dec. 3, Ban noted "persons with disabilities have the ability to make valuable contributions in the workforce as employees, entrepreneurs and employers."

In his message for the Day, whose theme this year is "Decent work for persons with disabilities," Ban said "whenever the opportunity arises, persons with disabilities prove their worth as productive members of the workforce."

He added that "changing workplace environments and advances in information and communications technology are also giving persons with disabilities new avenues for seeking decent work."

The U.N. chief called on the international community to reaffirm the commitment to seeking equal rights for all, and to ensure the full participation of persons with disabilities in the lives of their communities.
