Seventy-eight percent of the respondents of a Center of Public Opinion (CBOS) poll said they were against Polish soldiers' presence in Afghanistan with 48 percent of them being firmly against it, the Polish PAP news agency reported on Tuesday. 

Only 17 percent of the respondents declared support for the operation. Five percent had no opinion on the matter.

The number of opponents to the military presence of Polish soldiers in Afghanistan has grown by three percentage points over the recent six months. The number of supporters went down by 3 percent.

According to CBOS, 81 percent of the polled do not support Polish soldiers' presence in Iraq, with 49 percent of them being firmly against it. Only 15 percent of the respondents support Poland's participation in the mission there and 4 percent have no opinion on the issue.

In comparison to the results recorded last January, the number of opponents to the Polish mission in Iraq grew by 4 percent, and the number of supporters dropped by 5 percent.

The survey was conducted on June 1-4 on a representative random sample of 903 adult Poles.

Poland has more than 1,100 troops as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

Currently, 900 polish officers and soldiers stationed in Iraq. In December 2006, Polish President Lech Kaczynski approved the government's decision of prolonging the mission of Poland's presence in Iraq until the end of 2007.
